Never Coming Home's duo release definitely doesn't make you "Feel Nothing"

Rhode Island pop punk band Never Coming Home released their duo "Coffins/Feel Nothing" this past Friday, October 29. These two songs were an interesting change of pace following their single "South Station" which was released this past August. Prior to this release, Never Coming Home fans were familiar with emotive lyrics coupled with cheery instrumentals (in true pop punk fashion).
One of the first things to note in all of these singles is really how far the production quality has come for this band of 4. While their first ever release "Runaway" (as recently as 2019) had largely at-home production vibes, the more recent singles sound much cleaner, and have a much fuller sound for that matter.
The first song of the duo "Coffins" feels much like what we as listeners have come to be familiar with when we think of the band Never Coming Home; up beat drums and very fun guitar solos matched with lyrics of frustration and betrayal. Never Coming Home is one of those bands that reminds you that pop punk doesn't have to feel stale, or boring. Though lead singer Anthony Hefler may be singing "you're going nowhere sweetie, so stay away from me", we can definitely see Never Coming Home going places some day soon.
The second song of the duo is what is the most interesting turn for the band. This is the first song we have ever heard Never Coming Home's second singer Aidan Sullivan take more of an upfront vocal place on one of their songs, and the difference in vocals definitely changes the game. Overall, this song has vibe unlike anything else the band has put out so far. With much heavier mathrock and midwest emo influences, paired with the contrast between the two singers vocal ranges, there's a grit to this song that I haven't heard this band carry before. I can not say enough about how much I adore the contrast between Aidan's lower register and Anthony's higher voice during their call-and-response like chorus. If this song is any clue into the direction the band will be moving towards into the future, I can for sure say I will be excited for their next release, and then some!
