Matilde Heckler’s New Single “Emo Needs More Fucking Girls” teaches us exactly that.

After gracing us with her first emo-acoustic song “I Think I’m Doing Better Alone Again” (read our review here) this past December, violinist and singer-songwriter Matilde Heckler has returned to give us yet another incredible single.

Unlike her debut song, which was acoustic, personal, and all things delicate, Matilde’s new song “Emo Needs More Fucking Girls” is loud, angry; and in your face. The difference between the two songs is immediately clear through both the heavy baseline, and Matildes very first lyrics being “i wanna be a girl in a band / flashing my tits on the sage / screaming about how punk's not dead / eating men for dinner every night..”

The whole song feels very reminiscent of Riot Grrrl bands like Bratmobile or Be Your Own PET; the tongue in cheek mentions of pink nail polish and flouncy little skirts feels very feminist-punk. It’s refreshing to see new riot grrrl-adjacent music be released, as while we are huge fans of the sound, classic feminist punk bands often had a history of Transphobia or Anti-Blackness. It is incredibly exciting to find new music that shares the same sound without the same values.

“Emo Needs More Fucking Girls” is also the first time we see an attitude from Heckler, in a very cool way. Listeners Hear Heckler shout, curse, demand your attention, and even get a bit playful with the stereotypes she is criticizing. Matilde makes it clear she does NOT want to be “one of the guys” — she wants to wear glitter and twirl in skirts and still be absolutely kick ass. And in this song, she is exactly that.

It also goes without mentioning that by far the coolest part of this song is Heckler absolutely shredding on the electric violin in between hard hitting verses. With Matilde’s claim to fame being that they’re incredibly talented on such an unconventional instrument in Emo and punk music, it’s no surprise that the violin solos on this song are insanely good. Seeing Heckler be able to adapt their instrument to any genre they please really just shows how talented they really are.

It’s really cool to have such wide variety in so few releases, and speaks a lot to how Matilde’s self proclaimed “Hot Girl Emo” genre is truly whatever they want it to be. It is incredibly easy to worry about sticking to one sound and not making any wild moves, so to have only released two songs and already have transcended the constraints of genre is incredibly impressive and is not easy to do.

After listening to the song, we have only become bigger fans of Matilde, and more excited for each release that will come after this (especially now that Matilde seems to be working with a full band !!) we can’t recommend “Emo Needs More Fucking Girls” enough.
