Massachusetts based-singer and musician Matilde Heckler released her debut single “I Think I’m Doing Better Alone Again” today, December 3rd!
Marketing herself as “hot girl emo”, the shining jewel of Matilde’s sound is the beautiful violin that dances throughout this song. Listening to it feels like every time you’ve heard a horn part while listening to a Midwest emo song and lost your mind a bit, except for the entire listen.
Matilde’s lyrics, like “wring me out until I’m nothing, but a shell of a body lacking emotion” really convey the awfully relatable hopelessness that comes with heartbreak, and struggling mental illness; while the lightness in her voice and violin make that hopelessness feel almost comforting.
This song is definitely something refreshing to add to one of your sad playlists if you’re tired of what you’re usually listening to; it has no clear genre barriers. “I Think I’m Doing Better Alone Again” could easily be placed next to other indie, emo, alternative, and even indie-pop songs and feel like it belongs there; Hence the creation of the genre “hot girl emo”.
We’ve had the song on repeat since we first heard it, and still can’t get enough. Matilde is an extremely talented singer, songwriter, and violinist, and we are super thankful to be able to share their first song, and to showcase the diversity that DIY has to offer.
