Bullpup's "Be Evil" is a masterpiece, everyone knows it, everyone's talking about it

Updated: Dec 29, 2021

Anyone familiar with The Agency knows that we have been huge fans of Massachusetts theatrical emo band Bullpup since basically the dawn of the podcast's creation, and this album is no exception. Released on October 29, and consisting of 11 songs, this album is the most complex, well produced, and well.. iI unruly compilation of songs that Bullpup has put out so far.

Between the raw, honest lyrics of both lead singers Trevor Sullivan and Jon Garniss, the vibrant lead guitar, and the additional flair of Jon's piano, Bullpup consistently carries a kind of sound that not many others in DIY are making. Using Inspiration from plays like Spring Awakening and Heathers, Bullpup is able to add a whole new layer to emo music.

The combination of hefty emotional lyrics and aggressive instrumentals fill you with more emotions than there are words for. It somehow makes you feel helpless and powerful all at once. This is also the first album that we heavily meet newest member and lead guitarist, Robby Beland, and now knowing what Bullpup has come to sound like with him, anything produced before him really feels like it was missing something all along.

From the variation between each song (while still feeling like one complete entity), to the amount of important and necessary topics discussed throughout (climate change, issues with identity, assault, mental illness, etc.), there is one thing for sure; Bullpup is capable of so much more than we had seen in their first album "No One Must Die" (released in 2019). Listening to this album is a brutal, intimate experience, and I wish I could experience listening to it for the first time all over again.
